Farm to Institution
In Missouri, the Farm to School project is based out of the larger Farm to Institution program run through the Missouri Council on Activity and Nutrition (MOCAN).
Farm to Institution (FTI) involves purchasing and using locally and regionally grown and raised products in schools, hospitals, child care centers, universities, prisons, and other institutional settings. Farm to School, Farm to Cafeteria, and Farm to Tray are other names for Farm to Institution.
Farm to Institution projects have the potential to
- Improve the health of Missourians:
- Provide opportunities for Missouri's farmers:
- Create stronger local economies and communities.
Farm to Institution also involves increasing knowledge and awareness of food and farming. Successful projects often include school or worksite gardens, educational programs, field trips to local farms, and special events featuring local chefs, farmers, and celebrities.
